Palm Jumeirah : The new home for the QE2 in Dubai
Nakheel, a leading Dubai property development company and subsiduary of Dubai World, who last year purchased the QE2, has this week announced that the new home for the world famous cruise liner will be at The Palm Jumeirah, Dubai where she will be the showpiece of a prestigious marina development.
The QE2 will head a palatial 300m long pier from starting from the trunk of The Palm Jumeirah and heading out into the waters of the Arabian Gulf. She will be transformed into a luxurious floating hotel, featuring public promenades, retail outlets, cafes and restaurants, as well as a heritage museum displaying artifacts from the QE2 and maritime history.
Johann Schumacher, Director of The Palm Jumeirah, said: “The arrival of QE2 is one of the most anticipated events of the year and Nakheel is proud to be the custodian of such a historic treasure. The world’s most famous ocean liner will form the focal point of an exciting new development that will be a spectacular and must-see attraction on Palm Jumeirah.”
“QE2 will provide the third jewel in the crown of Palm Jumeirah’s world class destination offerings and the perfect complement to Atlantis, Cirque du Soleil, and Trump International Hotel & Tower. Providing her with a permanent home in Dubai not only secures a sustainable future for one of the brightest stars of the global tourism and leisure industry, but also takes us one step further to making Palm Jumeirah the centre of tourism entertainment in Dubai.”
Nakheel will begin construction of this luxury marina development and the QE2s berth in September and hope to establish it as a cultural centre and tourist attraction on Palm Jumeirah paying homage to one of the worlds most famous ocean liners.
